‘No time to be timid’: Changes to legal protection for species afoot

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), which has launched the consultation, is the public body thatadvises the UK government and devolved administrations on UK-wide and international nature conservation, andthe new proposals are part of the Quinquennial Review (QQR), which provides recommendations every five years tothe environment secretary, the Scottish government and Welsh government for changes to the WCA schedules.Earlier this year, the JNCC caused a furore when it first published its ‘information pack’ about its proposals whichwould have seen only ‘critically endangered’ species given protection, and those that are currently listed as‘vulnerable and near threatened’ losing out. It prompted 30 NGOs to write to the committee calling for a publicconsultation on the review.
