Cameron defends ditching £1bn carbon capture prize

Prime minister David Cameron has defended his government's decision to abandon funding one of two carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects last year . He came before the House of Commons Liaison Committee, comprising the heads of select committees, in January (see p5). He told the MPs that he "completely believed in the idea" of CCS but the economics "aren't working at the moment". Providing £1bn for the White Rose project at Drax or SSE's Peterhead gas retrofit is "£1bn that we could spend on flood defences, schools or the health service - but... that doesn't give you carbon capture and storage that is competitive" .
