Days before South Africa's general election 18 months ago, the white rightwingers of this languid Afrikaner farming town, in the former Boer republic of the Orange Free State, built gun-towers and encircled them with razor wire to block the road between their white town and the adjacent black township of Rammulotsi. It was a last defiant stand against the approach of democracy, and of black voters into the white town. It failed, and next week, on November 1st, the game is finally up.
