Independent culture is a slippery term, much like the set of practices it attempts to define. Similar to David Edgar's term "provocative culture", independent culture is a vibrant effort that positions itself in opposition to dominant elite institutions as well as mass commercial culture. It is made up of individual initiatives that (oftentimes) purposefully distance themselves from the canon of cultural and social discourse. Independent culture is dynamic and fluid, decentralized and inclusive, and very difficult to pin down.
