Design for Life: Creating Meaning in a Distracted World by Stuart Walker

For over 20 years Walker has been an active design researcher and practitioner. His scholarship works to challenge prevailing orthodoxy in design practice and research. His focus on sustainable and propositional design has contributed to a vocabulary in design studies and makes sense of marginalized and challenging practices, as they have emerged and evolved to become part of the canon. In Design for Life, Walker reflects on this body of work. He offers an authoritative account with a voice developed through experience and the knowhow acquired while treading the tine between theoretical research and design practice. The book offers the realization that research and practice are one and the same and, importantly, that design in its own disciplinary right should be viewed as an epistemological agent, capable of generating knowledge and creating meaning in ways that the sciences in the essen- tialist positive traditions do not and cannot.
