摘要

In July 307,n1 the forces of Demetrius Poliorcetes laid siege to the ancient city ofnMegara, then garrisoned by the forces of his rival Cassander. The ancient literarynsources for this event describe it in the language of liberty, polis autonomy andnreciprocity: Diodorus described how, after the fall of the city, the Antigonids pro-nclaimed a restoration of autonomia to the demos (Diodorus Siculus 20.46.3); Plutarchnheld that the expulsion of Cassander’s garrison amounted to liberation (Life ofnDemetrius 9.5). According to Diodorus, Demetrius received worthy honours (timônnaxiologôn) from those he had treated well at Megara.n2 This response suggests thatnthere was, within that city, a group of citizens who were ready to react to his pledgesnof autonomy in an ostensibly positive way, probably in the hope of securing betterntreatment for their community.
