A system for two-piece can decorators developed to enable label changes to be made in 30 seconds for each colour has been launched to canmakers for further testing. First revealed at Cannex in 2015, the QLC-System from Rosario in the Netherlands features sleeves with elastomer coatings that are direct laser engraved to provide a three-dimensional plate. This enables better control of dot gain. Conventional printing cylinders require clearances that have to be loose enough for replacement, but this means that it takes a period of production for adjustments to get the registration correct. The QLC-System sleeves are engraved in one piece to the correct diameter, offering fit over the whole label, says Rosario's Harry Van Tuyn.
