The opening of the Dieter Rains' exhibition of the Design Museum was an enjoyable event, but it was perhaps more of a triumph for the museum's founder Terence Conran than anyone else. Giving an impromptu speech, Conran thanked director Deyan Sudjic for realising 'his dream'of what the institution should be, by running exhibitions on David Chipperfield and the German industrial designer at the same time. Others at the opening were less kind, still mourning the eclecticism and multidisciplinary nature of former director Alice Rawsthorn's reign and finding the collection of aging men a little wearing. What is Sudjic doing with the Design Museum? Sometimes it feels a little like he hasn't updated his contacts book since his days at Blueprint magazine in the 1980s.
