MEMORIAL FOR ROYAL MARINES BACA ARCHITECTS

Baca Architects' memorial for Royal Marines killed on operations since 2000 has a 'memorial wall' set into a bank, facing into the wind driven up the mouth of the River Exe, with seven pillars of stone. As there are eight marines in a unit, the monument symbolises marines lost at sea or unrecovered. Contrasting rough and smooth stone finishes on either side of the wall represent the transformation of trainees. The names of the marines killed in action are cast into shaped metal plaques which will be fixed into the wall in a diamond pattern until its inside face is covered.
