Alison Brooks wins Oxford college contest

Alison Brooks Architects has won the invited competition to design a 'third quad' for Exeter College at the University of Oxford. The practice saw off finalists Eric Parry Architects, Haworth Tompkins, Wright (&) Wright and a collaboration between Richard Sundberg Architects and Berman Guedes Stretton Architects in the contest organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants. The brief called for a £11-14 million overhaul of the college's new Walton Street site, formerly owned by Ruskin College. It will house 100 study-bedrooms, fellows' study rooms, theatres and public areas, with space for 120 bicycles. Malcolm Reading said: '[The practice] shares the college's vision and has a fresh eye, a passion for quality in materials and craftsmanship, a delight in place-making and a unique style.' Work is expected to start on site in late 2012 and complete by September 2014.
