How do we decide what good architecture is? There has never been a consensus and there probably never will be. Even the RIBA gets confused from time to time. In 2010,0'Donnell + Tuomey s An Gaelaras was reviewed for an RIBA Award by Andrew Groarke of Carmody Groarke, Clyde Markwell of Knox & Markwell and lay-judge Morag Myerscough, a graphic designer. To this discerning crew, it simply wasn't good enough to merit a regional gong. But this year, Soraya Khan of Theis and Khan, Ciaran Mackel of ARE) Ciaran Mackel Architects and lay-judge Eileen Adams, an educationalist, decided otherwise: O'Donnell + Tuomey picked up its twelfth RIBA Award and, a few months later, a coveted berth on the Stirling Prize shortlist.
