The studio natural ventilation chimneys are an exemplar of Arup Associates' multidisciplinary approach: completely integrated environmental, acoustic, mechanical, structural and architectural design. Television studios normally require a high degree of mechanical cooling to deal with the heat generated by lighting and other equipment. They also require unusually high control of external noise. In this kind of environment, natural ventilation would appear to be counter-intuitive: for example, if a window is opened, noise is always brought in along with the fresh air.
