It's long past the time when RIBA presidents should be reimbursed forrnwhat can be, and perhaps ought to be, a full-time role ('RIBA president pay debate heats up' AJ 06.09.12). I made a very similar proposal to the RIBA Council in 1998 - there was a close vote against. But it is not just about money. This is just one element in combating the reducing status, over many decades, of national institutions such as the RIBA and their presidents. A longer term -four years, say - would give time for presidents to effect change.
