Nobody knows why, on 19 July 1545, Henry Vffl's flagship, the Mary Rose, sank in the Solent near Portsmouth during a battle with the French fleet. The loss was in one respect fortuitous: when the ship capsized, its starboard side became embedded in clay below the soft sediment of the seabed, enabling it to survive intact. Its port side eroded after its hull filled with silt and what remained of the ship was then protected by a layer of hard clay.
