A tough year for Atkins, whose UK operating profits fell by 20 per cent for the six months to September, leading the firm to cut its UK workforce by eight per cent, losing 878 employees in the year to September 2011. But this has been countered by an increase of more than a quarter in its global business turnover. David Tonkin, Atkins' regional managing director blamed staff losses in cutbacks to highways and transportation. 'It is incredibly painful and difficult resizing, but it would appear we got it right.'
