The letter of the week's author will receive an AJ mug. Letters should be received by 10am on the Monday before publication. The AJ reserves the right to edit letters. Publication of new county editions of Pevsner's The Buildings of England offers the opportunity to look at the question of what message the series conveys. Leeds is a focal point within the West Riding. So we might start there. St James' Hospital, as it was known at the time of the first edition, won an award for its architects, Perkins and Backhouse. Yet it is not included. Ideally one would ask Professor Pevsner why this was so. Actually, I did. Pevsner did not know and told me that the supervisor for the area decided such matters. Hence selection criteria might well vary across the country as a whole.
