Knight to design Finland's longest bridge

Knight Architects has won the international contest to design a 3 km-long bridge in Helsinki. The practice was part of an Anglo-Finnish team, which saw off 10 rival bids to win the job, including one from London-based Amanda Levete Architects, which was named joint runner-up alongside a Finnish-led outfit. Shortlisted teams in the Europe-wide contest - which opened two years ago and received more than more than 50 entries -included Ben van Berkel of UNStudio and Spanish bridge designer Javier Manterola. The €86 million Crown Bridges scheme - known locally as the Kruunusillat -connects the Finnish capital's new Kruunuvuorenranta district to the city centre.
