KING'S CROSS SQUARE, LONDON N1C STANTON WILLIAMS

King's Cross Square is the final part of the £550 million redevelopment around King's Cross and St Pancras Stations, supported by Network Rail. The complex brief, ranging from re-use, restoration and new-build requirements, inspired a collaborative response from the design team from the onset. Lighting designers Studio Fractal and architects Stanton Williams worked together, paying close attention to detail, to achieve a seamless integration of both the lighting and landscaping elements of the square. Three 20m-high bespoke lighting masts act as a visual aid to bring forward the civic scale of the historic station facade. They provide crisp, directional illumination, while the facades gentle uplighting results in a dramatic backdrop, accentuating the natural contours and texture of the historic brickwork. Six smaller masts give a softer definition to the square's western edge.
