'My first thought when I saw it was "lucky kids",' said one judge on viewing Architype's well thought-out Robert Fitzroy Academy. The complex project saw the architects tackling a multifaceted brief- part restoration, part renovation and part extension -to create a coherent and positive learning environment. The goal was to transform the Davidson Centre in Croydon into a new primary school accommodating 840 pupils and 90 teachers to meet the shortfall , of school places in the London borough. Locally listed, the site comprised a series of buildings from different eras. A 1950s brick building joined two fine Edwardian buildings, while a 1970s steel framed structure housed the gym, sports hall and dining hall and a 1920s block formed the entrance.
