The Cooperage is located in central London and was built in the early 1900s. It had previously been converted to residential use but this work had been somewhat unsympathetic to the property, removing many original features and leaving the interior spaces poorly configured. It was a high priority for us and our clients to preserve and celebrate the remaining original elements while extending the house vertically and enlarging the basement. We arranged family and social spaces on the lower levels, with more private bedrooms and studies above. To ensure the family living rooms would be dramatic and not dark we removed a large section of the ground floor slab to create a triple-height, top-lit space. This brings daylight into the depths of the home, and makes the original timber roof structure part of the living space, reconnecting the house to its industrial heritage. A double-height dining area sits beneath an opening glass roof, enabling it to be used as a semi-outdoor space.
