The words 'expressive', 'restrained' and 'suppressed' can be used to praise or blame architects'work. 'Self-expressive', 'self-restrained' and 'repressed' are related to these concepts, but focus on architects as well as their creations. On the one hand there is a nexus of ideas and axioms such as Mies van der Rohe's 'Less is more' or Lao Tzu's 'We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want.' On the other, there are expectations that artists should have a voice and that buildings should communicate.
