In the current market, the cheapest product is often selected as a short-term cost saving. We live in the age of 'value engineering'; but it is worth keeping in mind that this will ultimately have an impact on the quality and lifespan of your project. It is difficult for designers and specifiers to ensure that a chosen product, material or system is actually used on their projects or, if it is used, that the required guarantees and warranties are accepted by all relevant parties. A robust specification goes a long way towards achieving these aims. Robust, however, should not imply 'wordy'. Too much text will turn a reader away, while too little might miss a crucial point.
