The new intervention consists of pavilions envisioned as part of a long-term strategy of maintenance and care for Dulwich Picture Gallery, extending out to the neighbouring community and theiruse of the gardens. Looking at Sir John Soane's unrealised quadrangle scheme forthe building, 'Gallery for all', a series of ante-pavilions accumulates alongside the biennial pavilion to host workshops and resident artists' spaces. This programme is woven into the existing. Inspired by Soane, the arch plays an important role in the scheme's tectonics, being a large feature of its aesthetics, orienting visitors through the pavilions and providing natural light to the gallery. An ethos of care goes beyond the programme and materials. Reclaimed brick from local yards are used, echoing Dulwich's brick-manufacturing past.
