David Adjaye recently unveiled designs for a proposed south London community pavilion and memorial to Cherry Groce, who was wrongfully shot in her home by police in 1985-an eventthat sparked the Brixton riots. Eagle-eyed readers, however, have pointed outthatthe background of the CGI produced by Adjaye Associates is not a true likeness of Windrush Square, where the installation will sit. In a bizarre twist, half of the Black Cultural Archives building - Pringle Richards Sharratt's cube-like extension- has been omitted from the image, while the Georgian former Raleigh Hall has been elongated to produce an alternate reality. Ironic that, in attempting to commemorate Black British history, a large portion of a building dedicated entirely to it has been eradicated.Meanwhile, over at the Royal Academy, it's Adjaye himself who's gone missing. The Covid crisis means this year's summer exhibition will differ from its 251 predecessors, not least as it is being held in October. Butthis isn'tthe only change. David Adjaye, due to curate the architecture room at the RA, has quietly been replaced by Eva Jiricna, who selected for the show (and, memorably, painted the room vivid yellow) in 2013. A spokesperson admitted the revised date meant a diary clash for Adjaye and said Jiricna had 'kindly stepped in to implement the vision for the room.' It is understood that Adjaye may yet return for the 2021 showstopper.
