摘要

I was encouraged to see Barry Davies' appeal for a realistic approach to design for people with disabilities, citing the Equality Act (AJ 27.08.20). As a disciple of Selwyn Goldsmith, I've been campaigning for over 40 years for architects to consider the needs and rights of those who are less able-bodied. The mantra can never be repeated too often: inclusive design - considering access, surfaces, colours, lighting, ironmongery etc - is beneficial to all, be they disabled, elderly, myopic, pregnant, tall, short, obese, members of a BAME or LGBT+ community, and so on and so on. Abandon the design guides' and Building Regulations' concept of Mr Average and put real people and diversity at the centre, supported by scientific and social research. The key, of course, lies in education, eradication, edification.
