AJ100 debutant Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt is a rare - at least in architectural circles - early bloomer. Remarkably, the practice's entry into the rankings of the nation's largest architectural powerhouses comes just three years after it won the BD Young Architect of the Year Award. None of the founders are over 43. Yet, since setting up the practice amid the depths of recession in 2007, they have managed to create a company with offices in Hampshire and London, and a workforce of more than 40 staff. Director and co-founder David Ayre, 42, says:'It feels like our moment.lt is where we want to be. And we don't want to settle at 89 [in the AJ100]. [But] it is not about size. It is about being involved in challenging projects that make a real difference. We feel we are ready to be at this sort of level.' Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt's journey from micro start-up to a business with a turnover of more than £3 million a year and a portfolio of projects with a contract value of £20 million-plus has taken little over a decade.
