Legacy Croydon Youth Zone is intended to give the area's young people aged 8-19, or up to 25 for those with a disability, somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to - occupying their bodies and minds with engaging activities, helping them develop new skills and socialise in a safe, positive and accessible environment. The brief included a four-court sports hall, climbing wall, gym, performance space, art and music rooms, alongside other facilities such as a cafe, where young people can have a hot meal and spend time together. A secure outdoor recreation area and small football pitch were also included. Among the bright super-graphics inside this new youth centre-many of them designed by the young people who use it-two more sober clusters of printed plaques are displayed, listing the sources of its funding. One names capital funders, including the local authority, which put up half the money, as well as local charities and philanthropists from whom OnSide, the organisation that built and runs the centre, raised the money. A larger display lists the mainly local businesses and individuals who contribute to the centre's considerable ongoing revenue funding, which has to cover running a 2,300m~2 building with 18 full-time staff.
