When we add to or alter an existing building, we respond almost intuitively to its volumes, using a mix of traditional techniques for retained fabric and contemporary products for the new. The volumes are something that hugely impact your experience of the interior, even if you're not craning your neck to look up at the roof. Even if you can't actually see the 'roofscape', it's something that can inform the design strategy strongly. Performance issues with respectto the roof are demanding, needing a careful working-through of outlets, falls, upstands and ventilation. You also have to detail it as if you can see it, because in urban areas you often can.
