摘要

Addressing the 68th Annual General Meeting of the Eastern India Textile Mills' Association in Kolkata on 26th September, 2002 Shri A. N. Choudhary expressed serious concern about the progressive decline and decay of the textile industry of the eastern region and more particularly of West Bengal. He stated that due to ever increasing input costs, high rate of wages, exorbitant power costs, lack of facilities for captive generating power and low productivity, the working of the textile mills had become uneconomic and most of them had been forced to suspend operations. A few mills though running had been working at a small percentage of their installed capacity or had resorted to job working for survival.
