FASTNESS PROPERTIES OF NATURAL DYE HAMELIA (Hamelia Patens) ON COTTON

摘要

The Hamelia dye is obtained from leaves, which are not used for any good purpose and also processing involves no toxic chemicals. This dye produced number of shades on cotton using common mordants like alum, ferrous sulphate, copper sulphate & chrome with good fastness properties. Colour fastness to washing was found to be fair to good, rubbing fastness good perspiration fastness was also fair to good. Hamelia dyed samples had fair light fastness properties. Post mordanted samples showed better colour fastness although post mordanting methods changed the basic pink colour of Hamelia dye. Thus this source of dye can be used for dyeing cotton yarns. The application procedure is quite easy and can be adopted at the village level.
