APPLICATION OF WOOL IN HAND MADE CARPET-SOME TECHNICAL INTERVENTIONS

The age old hand made carpet industry is majorly depended on wool fibres. About 80-90% of hand made carpets are manufactured from wool. The basic reason of popularity of wool fibre stems from the period of earlier age. Wool has been used from the earliest history of carpet construction because the early rug makers were nomadic sheep herders. Since then rug making has been associated with the technology of the wool industry and this tradition has provided the benchmark by which other fibres are compared. The various subjective parameters which decides application of wool in carpet are : 1. Appeal of the design/ motif. 2. Colour combination in the design. 3. Finishing in terms of hand feel. 4. Comfort in terms of foot feel. But today's world is more about customer focused, there is even need of assurance of fulfillment of objective need of the carpet as well. In the same orientation wool carpet requires assurance of certain objective issues, these are : 1. Knot density (Construction), pile height, pile weight, other dimensional parameters. 2. Colour Fastness (To shampooing, light & rubbing) 3. Abrasion Resistance (Longevity) 4. Static & Dynamic Loading (Prediction to Load Resistance) 5. Tuft Withdrawal Force (knot/ pile retention strength) 6. Compressibility and Resilience (Conformability long term) 7. Dust repellence etc. In the present study various aspects of application of wool is discussed along with technical interventions related with evaluation of wool fibre, woolen yarn to wool carpet.
