The image of the Italian textile sector in the collective international consciousness immediately evokes an industry dominated by designer clothing. Endless fashion shows and the shop windows of the major cities throughout the globalised world reinforce this notion. Such textile and clothing products, as well as home furnishings, were indeed the core business of the Italian textile industry until a few years ago, and in 2001 still continued to show (limited) growth with a turnover approaching EUD50 billion.
