Sakichi Toyoda's invention of the automatic loom type G in 1924 led to the formation of Toyota Automatic Loom Works which rapidly became one of the leading suppliers of weaving machines worldwide. Now known as Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) the original company has grown to 27,500 employees at 34 production sites, with textile machinery representing 3.9% of its US$11 billion sales, with the majority accounted for by automotive components and materials handling equipment. Between 1980 and 2003, TICO installed 108,000 water jet looms and 66,500 airjet looms worldwide, in addition to over 10 million spindles on spinning frames and 7,130 roving frames.
