A Deeper Analysis

The market for 'eco' textiles is changing and the analysis of what really makes a textile environmentally friendly is becoming more sophisticated. For several years the organic movement has carried the flag of environmental responsibility, but this year even Organic Exchange - hitherto closely associated with this single strand of activism - is broadening its remit and changing its name to reflect a more comprehensive set of 'issues'. The one environmental problem that organic cotton cannot overcome is the demand of it crops for irrigation, which has led to the charge that even this chemical-frese form of agriculture is unsustainable when compared to some of the alternatives.
