A recent exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum reveals the rich and intricate relationships between quilts and their makers. A similar history of cloth, community and complexity is revealed in Dress Culture in Late Victorian Women's Fiction; Literacy, Textiles, and Activism by Christine Bayles Kortsch. The book presents an absorbing exploration of the role played by dress and the practice of sewing in a range of novels by late Victorian women authors. What makes it particularly fascinating is its study of authors and texts far from familiar to twenty-first-century readers. While the work of the Bronte sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot are extensively read and studied, the novels of later women authors, Olive Schreiner, Margaret Oliphant and Sarah Grand among them, are for the most part forgotten by all but the avid reader of Victorian fiction.
