This is a remarkable book. It is a moving account of one man's long life and provides a mass of well-substantiated information about social, economic and technological change in the UK in the twentieth century. It includes many references to textiles and dress, and the locally made tack essential for working with horses on remote farms with no access to motorised vehicles. However, The Silent Weaver is not about weaving, silent or otherwise, although the book's title highlights the ubiquity of the term 'weaver' as a 'catch all' category for makers of handmade, yarn-like and cloth-like products.
