摘要

Adoption of mass marketing techniques is stimulated by abundance of low-cost labour and mechanisation of the clothing industry, a paper read to the 83rd World Conference of the Textile Institute. From the middle of the 19th century, the textile industry has played a key role in the industrialisation process in most countries. This is not surprising, given the combination of a large domestic demand (clothing being a basic necessity) and the early success in mechanising textile production. Clothing itself, it should be added, was a relative latecomer to this process, especially as far as international trade is concerned. The RTW industry received an early stimulus from the demand for uniforms during World War Ⅰ, but it remained mostly a domestic-oriented industry until the latter part of the 1950s.
