The idea of linking voice and data communications is not new — it has been going on for some time in call centers worldwide. However, the availability of cheap, ultra-powerful communications technology is new. As such, it presents small business with the ultimate opportunity — the opportunity to eliminate the advantages large companies have held by virtue of their giant budgets. The practicality for smaller applications of voice-data integration is largely due to the technological trend toward "off-the-shelf components. In this article, we will explore some of the elements that make up a voice/data application.
