'Mobile Telephony' is becoming the most popular form of communication throughout the world. The number of Mobile phones are increasing at a greater pace even in developed countries where fixed telephony has reached a saturation stage. The main reason of Mobile telephony gaining the more prominence is due to advances in the Radio access systems and digital networks. This article gives the evolution of Mobile telephony and transition of Cellular phones to Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS).
