Telecommunications in Panama: State of the Marketplace

The telecommunications market in Panama is gearing up for liberalization of its local and long distance sectors. This will be the first time in Panama's history that these services will be open to competition. By January 2003, C&W Panama's exclusivity over the basic telecommunications market will end. The government is hoping that with the emergence of competition will also come a growth spurt in new technology and services. Nevertheless, further liberalization in other areas, such as cellular, will be needed, as well as a reduction in import tariffs to stimulate foreign investment which will certainly be needed to encourage competition with C&W Panama.
