NTT is the Japanese state-owned former telecommunications monopoly. Although deregulation and a split-up of the company's business units in 1999 has caused it to face increased competition, the company continues to hold strong as the dominant player in the Japanese telecommunications industry. NTT DoCoMo, the company's wireless unit, became one of the first companies in the world to offer 3G wireless services with the introduction of its FOMA service in October 2001.
