China United Telecommunications, or China Unicom, was founded under the Company Law of the People's Republic of China. Its nationwide CDMA network was launched in January 2002, and its subscriber numbers have been climbing. It faces competition from the world's largest mobile communications provider in China Mobile. A decision by the Chinese government split China Telecom into two entities that will both seek mobile licenses. In addition, the changing telecom environment will lead to increased competition in the traditional fixed line market.
