Durbin Seeks Info on Policies Of ICT Companies in China

Sen. Dick Durbin (D., Ill.), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee's human rights and the law subcommittee, has asked information and communications technology (ICT) companies, including AT&T, Inc., Verizon Communications, Inc., and Sprint Nextel Corp., for information about the companies' operations in China and their plans "for protecting human rights, including freedom of expression and privacy, in China." In letters sent Feb. 2, Sen. Durbin asked the companies to "describe any specific measures you will take to ensure that your products and/or services do not facilitate human rights abuses by the Chinese government, including censoring the internet and monitoring political and religious dissidents."
