The Transportation Department has announced that it immediately will ban drivers of interstate trucks and commercial buses or vans with more than eight passengers from texting while driving, as it works to complete permanent, broader restrictions on the use of electronic devices behind the wheel. "We want the drivers of big rigs and buses and those who share the roads with them to be safe," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who announced the guidance at a Jan. 26 Washington news conference. "This is an important safety step and we will be taking more to eliminate the threat of distracted driving."
