Lawmakers Seek Assurances On FirstNet Opt-Out Process

Lawmakers Feb. 2 pressed FCC and First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) officials to ensure that they are taking adequate steps on cybersecurity for the new network and sought assurance from the FCC that it isn't "slow-walking" its rulemaking on its process for handling state opt-outs to dissuade states from going that route. During a hearing held by the House communications and technology subcommittee, Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D., Calif.), the panel's ranking member, noted that FirstNet last month released its request for proposals (RFP) and plans to have a vendor selected by year-end (TR, Feb. 1). "Ultimately, we all want to see the creation of a robust, reliable network that will eliminate the tragic communication failures on 9/11," Rep. Eshoo said. "Success will also be measured by whether we integrate the network with NG9-1-1, ensure device competition, and utilize strong security measures."
