Sen. Ed Markey (D., Mass.), one of the sponsors of the 1998 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), views the recent Federal Trade Commission announcement of a review of its COPPA Rule with "cautious optimism," according to Joseph Wender, senior policy adviser to the senator. The FTC has scheduled an Oct. 7 workshop as part of the COPPA Rule review and is also seeking comment. Speaking during an Aug. 23 Capitol Hill discussion of children's online privacy hosted the Family Online Safety Institute, Mr. Wender noted that "biometrics, genetics, [and] voice assistants [are] much more prevalent in the ecosystem" than they were even six years ago when the FTC last updated its COPPA Rule.
