New York—The spate of introductions of no-frills "network computers" that serve as platforms for network and Internet access, signifies more than relief from high PC costs. The hope of a growing list of network computer vendors is to wean users from the "Wintel" de facto standard for desktop PCs, established by Microsoft's Windows and Intel's chips. Both Microsoft and Intel are contenders in the network computer race also, having announced the NetPC, but they are running third behind rivals Oracle and Sun Microsystems.
