Do you sit on a board? Are you making an impact? Could you, in fact, be trying a bit too hard? Mina Mutafchieva, a former McKinsey consultant who is now partner at Dawn Capital, the specialist software investor, warns that sometimes board members can do too much. “The best thing you can do as a board member is know when to say nothing,” she says. “Board members who micromanage are doing those companies a disservice. “I have been an investor for most of my career,” she continues. “During that time, I have witnessed many former operators, who have taken on a board role, really struggle to remember that they are not the operator any more. It is up to the team to deliver and if there is an execution issue, then it is up to the board to define what the issue is but to leave the executive to sort it out. Boards should not be interfering with execution problems. That distinction is sometimes difficult to make.”
