Despite falling revenues, broadband-access-equipment vendors are reporting a steady increase in the number of tenders and contracts being awarded by both broadband-cable and DSL operators. Telecom Markets' analysis of the major broadband-access-equipment contracts made public since January 2002 (see fig.) shows that 45 per cent of the deals were announced in June or July. Vendors claim sales of DSL equipment have remained reasonably stable despite the downturn in other sectors. But although global shipments of DSL-access equipment in 2002 are expected to be 10 per cent higher in volume terms than in 2001, revenues from these sales are forecast to fall 26 per cent to $4.1 billion [EUD 4.2 billion] for the year, according to market research firm Dell'Oro Group.
