CSFB: Europe's incumbents to keep suffering until 2012

Incumbents in western Europe's major markets will see their combined fixed-line revenues decline by 20% to ?95 billion between 2004 and 2011, as the trends of fixed-to-mobile substitution, naked DSL and corporate migration to IP drive their total PSTN and ISDN access lines down by a quarter to 122 million, according to a CSFB report. Revenues for the region's fixed-line sector will not stabilise until 2012, when voice will be broadly bundled into access fees and DSL ARPU will have bottomed out, offering scope for new TV and other content services to lead to a gradual return to growth, predicts the investment bank (see fig.).
